The Phoenix Outdoor Centre has a fleet of Laser Pico sailing dinghys two RS Visions, an RS Feva, three Laser Radials and two Hansa 303 wide access boats and offers sailing courses linked to the RYA Stage 1 – 3 of the Youth Sailing Scheme and Levels 1 – 3 plus “Start Racing” of the National Sailing Scheme for adults. After participating in one of our courses, you can continue through our RYA youth “OnBoard” and adult Supervised Sailing sessions on Thursday evenings for recreational sailing or we can signpost you to one of the other sailing clubs on the Welsh Harp to take part in sail racing. We are an RYA Sailability Centre and can offer access to the water for people with disabilities,


STARTER SESSIONS – KAYAKING ~ SAILING ~ WINDSURFING

The Phoenix Canoe Club and Outdoor Centre in association with Royal Yachting Association “Push the Boat Out” & British Canoeing “National Go Canoeing Week”, are running a weekend of “Starter Sessions” in Kayaking, Sailing and Windsurfing on 13th, 16th, 18th and 21st May 2017 for anyone from age 9-99.

Saturday 13th May 2017                Sunday 21st May 2017

Session 1 – 10.00–11.30am          Session 1 – 10.00–11.30am

Session 2 – 12.00 – 1.30pm         Session 2 – 12.00–1.30pm

Session 3 – 2.00 – 3.30pm          Session 3 – 2.00–3.30pm

Tuesday 16th May 2017 – 7.00 – 8.30pm

Thursday 18th May 2017 – 7.00 – 8.30pm

The cost for the session is £10 per person for kayaking, sailing or windsurfing, which is refundable if you sign up for a Phoenix introductory course. All sessions must be pre-booked and paid for online.

Please arrive 20 minutes before the session starts to book in and get changed. Allow at least 20 minutes after the session as well.

YOU WILL NEED TO BRING:

  • T shirt or sweat shirt
  • Shorts or tracksuit trousers
  • Old trainers, sandals or wetsuit boots
  • Hat / suntan lotion if sunny
  • Towel
  • Dry clothes to go home in
  • Money for drinks / snacks
  • WebCollect printed booking voucher

We will supply dinghy or windsurfer, kayak and paddles plus cagoule and buoyancy aid. You will be in a coached group for the whole session.

ADULT COURSES

RYA Dinghy Sailing Level 1

An RYA course in dinghy sailing on the Welsh Harp Reservoir introducing you to the sport with all you need to know to get afloat under supervision.  The course will cover how to sail in all directions, including an awareness of launching and recovering.  At the end of the two day course you should be able to sail in light winds under supervision.

Course A – Weekend 29th and 30th April 2017 – Sat – 10.00am to 5.00pm / Sun – 11.00am to 5.00pm – £125

Course B – Weekend 17th and 18th June 2017 – Sat – 10.00am to 5.00pm / Sun – 11.00am to 5.00pm – £125

Course C – Saturday 9th and Sunday 16th July 2017 – Sat – 10.00am to 5.00pm / Sun – 11.00am to 5.00pm – £125

Course D – Weekend 16th & 17th September 2017 – Sat – 10.00am to 5.00pm / Sun – 11.00am to 5.00pm – £125

These courses are limited to a maximum of 6 people to one instructor.  There will be a safety boat and instructor on the water at all times.

We would recommend the purchase of the RYA book  “Start Sailing” G3 for teenagers and adults, as supplementary reading for the course.

RYA Dinghy Sailing Level 2 course

The RYA Dinghy Sailing Level 2 will set out the foundations of sailing for you.  You should already have sailing skills to the standard of Level 1.  The course will cover rigging, launching, sailing in all directions, capsize recovery and essential safety knowledge.  At the end of the two day course. you will be able to sail and make decisions in good conditions.

Course A – Weekend 1st and 2nd July 2017 – Sat – 10.00am to 5.00pm / Sun – 11.00am to 5.00pm – £125

Course B – Weekend 30th September & 1st October 2017 – Sat – 10.00am to 5.00pm / Sun – 11.00am to 5.00pm – £125

These courses are limited to a maximum of 6 people to one instructor.  There will be a safety boat and instructor on the water at all times.

 RYA Seamanship Skills Course

This is an advanced module where you will learn how to handle a boat in all circumstances and solve problems afloat.  The course covers launching and recovering the boat in different circumstances, stopping, reducing sail, recovering a man overboard and anchoring.  After the course you will be able to handle a wide range of situations afloat.

Course A – Weekend 14th and 15th October 2017 – Sat – 10.00am to 5.00pm / Sun – 11.00am to 5.00pm – £125

 SCHOOLS, GROUPS & COLLEGES

“Schools & Colleges RYA Stage 1” This course is based on 6 x 2hr sessions for up to 6 students in 3 dinghys to 1 instructor or up to 12 students in 6 dinghys to 2 instructors. At the end of this introductory course, you will have a basic understanding of how a boat sails and some experience of steering and handling the boat. The cost of the course includes the RYA Youth Sailing Scheme Logbook and Certification. We would recommend the purchase of the RYA book “Go Sailing” G32 for ages 7-12 or “Start Sailing” G3 for teenagers and adults, as supplementary reading for the course.

“Schools & Colleges RYA Stage 2” This course is based on 6 x 2hr sessions for up to 6 students in 3 dinghys to 1 instructor or up to 12 students in 6 dinghys to 2 instructors. At the end of Stage 2, you will have a range of sailing skills and background knowledge and be well on the way to being a confident small boat sailor. The cost of the course includes the RYA Youth Sailing Scheme Certification. We would recommend the purchase of the RYA Youth Sailing Scheme Logbook G11 (you should already have this from the “RYA Stage 1” course) and RYA book “Go Sailing” G32 for ages 7-12 or “Start Sailing” G3 for teenagers and adults, as supplementary reading for the course.

“Schools & Colleges RYA Stage 3” This course is based on 6 x 2hr sessions for up to 6 students in 6 dinghys to 1 instructor. Having completed Stage 3 you will be able to sail in any direction and rig and launch your boat. Your skills and knowledge mean that you can regard yourself as a sailor, not a beginner. The cost of the course includes the RYA Youth Sailing Scheme Certification. We would recommend the purchase of the RYA Youth Sailing Scheme Logbook G11 (you should already have this from the “RYA Stage 1” course) and RYA book  “Go Sailing” G32 for ages 7-12 or “Start Sailing” G3 for teenagers and adults, as supplementary reading for the course.
