Book courses

For novices wishing to join the Club, entrance is by successfully completing an Introductory BC One Star course. These are popular courses and you need to book early to ensure a place. If you have a minimum of the BC One Star award or higher, you can join the club by payment of annual membership fees. You must provide evidence of your current awards when joining.

The Club opens from 12 noon and finishes at 4.30pm (4.00pm during the winter months). As well as the courses below, we can offer advice on becoming a coach.  Coaches will also run occasional workshops to teach or improve paddle strokes. From Easter onward, we run a Youth Section “Splash n’ Dash” session with games, races and training from 2pm and fitness and coaching workshops for adults. Club members are free to attend as many or as few sessions as you wish – there is no need to book, but best to check the calendar that we are operating from the club HQ that day. We operate in most weather conditions, but if the forecast is for high winds or lightning, always check before leaving home by calling the Duty Coach on 07837 585798.

Please arrive early to allow time for changing and getting the kayaks and equipment out. When you arrive at the Club, please book in with duty coach or helper. To book on one of these courses , follow the booking instructions for each course. If you need further information before you book, contact us at  info@phoenixcanoeclub.co.uk

We have minimum numbers that we need to be able to run a course. If the course you book doesn’t fill up we will offer you an alternative course date or a full refund. If you need to cancel a booking we will usually try to offer you an alternative course or offer you a full or partial refund, depending on course numbers.

When you book onto a course, we need to capture certain personal information. We need this so that we can contact you and be aware of any particular needs to run the session or course effectively and safely.

BC TWO STAR COURSE

The Two Star is an improvement award that helps paddlers develop fundamental paddlesport skills on flat water.  The emphasis is on gaining a breadth of experience, creating the desired movement of the boat and developing an understanding of how the paddle, boat and water interact.

The award is obtained by taking an assessment in both a kayak and a canoe and you can choose which you want to treat as your main craft.  Holders of the Two Star are able to take part in a wider choice of club activities including trips to the River Wye, River Derwent, Lee Valley Whitewater Centre, Introductory Surf Course and the Foundation Safety & Rescue Training. We will provide a British Canoeing 2* Pass Slip which you can use to obtain a Certificate.

The river trip and assessment will be held at either the Fisheries on the Grand Union Canal or the River Beane at Hertford and a contribution towards petrol costs will be required.

We will have a good selection of club coaches to get the best out of you on the course and we see this as a big stepping stone in your paddling.

Check out the full Two Star syllabus here.

BC THREE STAR INTRO COURSE – KAYAK WW

Successful performance at this level indicates that a candidate can consider themselves an intermediate paddler rather than a beginner.  The Three Star whitewater paddler will be a competent performer in sheltered to moderate water environments (Grade 2[3]) and have the ability to paddle unsupervised, with similar standard paddlers on sheltered water.

For more details on the Three Star syllabus click here.

Course Dates for 2018:

  • Sunday 25th February 2018 – 3 Star Intro at Phoenix CC  – Open to Club Members only –  Registration Fee – £30 for BC Members / £40 for non-BC Members.  This introduction covers the flat water parts of the award and includes some theory training on white water paddling.  The cost includes the BC Fee for the award including a card Certificate and registration on the database.  To complete the award you need to book onto white water trips that we are running throughout the year and we would recommend trips to the Derwent, Wye, Dart Loop, Lower Tryweryn and Lee Valley.  When we feel you are at the required standard, we will book an assessment with British Canoeing for the next trip you can attend.  The amount of training you require will depend on your current ability and readiness to learn and progress. You will need to be able to roll your kayak as part of the 3 Star assessment.
  • Saturday 7th April 2018 – Whitewater Intro – River Derwent –  Cost £30 including transport

Bookings shut 1 week before the event

POOL SESSIONS 2019

Pool Sessions 2014

Check out the video by clicking here: Pool Session 2014 – 12 – it takes a bit of time to load!

We are running a series of pool sessions at the Mill Hill School swimming pool for Beginners, Improvers & Intermediate paddlers.  The pool sessions are for up to an hour each on Sunday evening and can be tailored to suit your needs.  If you are a new One Star paddler, we can focus on you gaining confidence on and under the water; improving support strokes and the use of the hip flick and possibly introduce rolling.  Two star paddlers can practice support strokes and Eskimo rescues, as well as learn to roll. Seasoned rollers can try different types of roll.

These sessions are available to all club members and non-members who have 1 Star, on a first come, first served basis, just book and pay online.  You can check availability on the WebCollect page.

The club will provide kayaks, paddles, spray decks and coaching.  All you need to bring is normal swimming gear and a t-shirt. We will meet you at the pool.  To give all members a chance to get a place, we are initially limiting places to 3 x 1 hour sessions per person (this will be policed and any extra spaces booked will be cancelled) – book now!  After 1st January 2018, you can freely book any places available! (We do not recommend bookings two hours consecutively on the same day). This year, you can pick and mix which dates and times you want. Most beginners will need at least two sessions, probably more to learn to roll. Bookings shut the day before the session.
