Book courses

For novices wishing to join the Club, entrance is by successfully completing an introductory British Canoeing “Paddle Discover” course. These are popular courses and you need to book early to ensure a place. If you have a minimum of the BC Paddle Discover or One Star award or higher, you can join the club by payment of annual membership fees. You must provide evidence of your current awards when joining.

The Club opens from 12 noon and finishes at 4.30pm (4.00pm during the winter months). As well as the courses below, we can offer advice on becoming a coach.  Coaches will also run occasional workshops to teach or improve paddle strokes. From Easter onward, we run a Youth Section session with games, races and training from 2pm and fitness and coaching workshops for adults. Club members are free to attend as many or as few sessions as you wish – there is no need to book, but best to check the calendar that we are operating from the club HQ that day. We operate in most weather conditions, but if the forecast is for high winds or lightning, always check before leaving home by calling the Duty Coach on 07837 585798.

Please arrive early to allow time for changing and getting the kayaks and equipment out. When you arrive at the Club, please book in with duty coach or helper. To book on one of these courses , follow the booking instructions for each course. If you need further information before you book, contact us at

We have minimum numbers that we need to be able to run a course. If the course you book doesn’t fill up we will offer you an alternative course date or a full refund. If you need to cancel a booking we will usually try to offer you an alternative course or offer you a full or partial refund, depending on course numbers.

When you book onto a course, we need to capture certain personal information. We need this so that we can contact you and be aware of any particular needs to run the session or course effectively and safely.

We are running a series of Taster Sessions in Kayaking, Sailing, Windsurfing and Stand Up Paddle Boarding throughout the season- these are an ideal way to try out a new sport, before signing up to a course.

The cost for the 90 minute session is £15 per person for kayaking, SUP’ing, sailing or windsurfing. National Park City Festival events are FREE! All sessions must be pre-booked and paid for online. Please arrive 20 minutes before the session starts to book in and get changed and allow a similar time afterwards. We will supply dinghy or windsurfer, SUP board, kayak and paddles plus cagoule and buoyancy aid. You will be in a coached group for the whole session.

We have a range of sessions including RYA’s “Push the Boat Out” (PTBO), British Canoeing’s “Go Canoeing” (GC), London Borough of Barnet’s “Silver Sunday” for the over 55’s and National Park City Festival. To book onto these courses, click on the blue button which will take you to our WebCollect page where you can register and pay online.

The British Canoeing “Paddle Explore” is an award that gives you ownership: allowing you to choose where you move next in the world of paddlesport. The course helps paddlers develop fundamental paddlesport skills on flat water. The emphasis is on gaining a breadth of experience, creating the desired movement of the boat and developing an understanding of how the paddle, boat and water interact.

The award is obtained by taking an assessment in either a kayak or canoe and you can choose which craft you wish to use. Holders of the “Paddle Explore” award are able to take part in a wider choice of club activities including trips to the River Wye, River Derwent, Lee Valley Whitewater Centre, Introductory Surf Course and the Foundation Safety & Rescue Training. We will provide successful paddlers with a British Canoeing “Paddle Explore” registration which you can use to obtain a Certificate.

The river trip and assessment will be held at either the Fisheries on the Grand Union Canal or the River Beane at Hertford.

We will have a good selection of club coaches to get the best out of you on the course and we see this as a big stepping stone in your paddling.

Pool Sessions 2014

Check out the video by clicking here: Pool Session 2014 – 12 – it takes a bit of time to load!

We are running a series of pool sessions at the Mill Hill School swimming pool for Beginners, Improvers & Intermediate paddlers.  The pool sessions are for up to an hour each on Sunday evening and can be tailored to suit your needs. If you are a new Paddle Discover / One Star paddler, we can focus on you gaining confidence on and under the water; improving support strokes and the use of the hip flick and possibly introduce rolling. Paddle Explore / Two star paddlers can practice support strokes and Eskimo rescues, as well as learn to roll. Seasoned rollers can try different types of roll.

These sessions are available to all club members and non-members who have Paddle Discover or 1 Star, on a first come, first served basis, just book and pay online. You can check availability on the WebCollect page. Beginners are also welcome, but please let us know at time of booking.

The club will provide kayaks, paddles, spray decks and coaching. All you need to bring is normal swimming gear and a t-shirt. We will meet you at the pool. To give all members a chance to get a place, we are initially limiting places to 3 x 1 hour sessions per person (this will be policed and any extra spaces booked will be cancelled) – book now! After 1st January 2019, you can freely book any places available! (We do not recommend bookings two hours consecutively on the same day). You can pick and mix which dates and times you want. Most beginners will need at least two sessions, probably more to learn to roll. Bookings shut the day before the session.
