Welcome to the Phoenix Canoe Club

The Phoenix Canoe Club and Phoenix Outdoor Centre are located next to the Brent (Welsh Harp) Reservoir on the borders of the Boroughs of Barnet and Brent between West Hendon and Wembley.  We are affilliated to British Canoeing / Canoe England and run by volunteer coaches and helpers, offering a warm welcome to new members and operate an equal opportunities policy offering paddlesport for all.  The Club was started by a small group of coaches in May 2004, following the closure of the Welsh Harp Youth Sailing Base and a lot of the original members and coaches are still with us.  We have both Junior (min. age 9 years) and Senior sections with an active and progressive programme of training, events and activities.

We have Junior Section activity session on Sunday afternoons and  fitness and coaching sessions for adults and through our Outdoor Centre, we are running RYA OnBoard youth and supervised sailing sessions after school, Paddle Parties to celebrate your special day and “Camp Phoenix” school holiday activity sessions.  We are accredited with Sport England’s ‘Clubmark’ which is built around a set of core criteria which ensure that accredited clubs operate to a set of consistent and accepted minimum operating standards. It is now universally recognised by clubs wishing to show good practice and demonstrate commitment in developing young people within their club. It is promoted and carefully branded, by Sport England.

Membership is by successfully completing our Introductory BC One Star Kayak Course, or already holding that award or higher. This ensures that all paddlers on club days are at a minimum standard and helps us maintain a safe operation.  There are Taster or Starter sessions run throughout the season to allow members of the public to have a go at kayaking or canoeing.  Most of our training is aimed at flat water, surf and whitewater recreational paddling.  We train teams every year for Barnet, Brent and Haringey for the London Youth Games canoe slalom event, but currently do not actively follow the competitive canoeing disciplines.

We are based at the Phoenix Outdoor Centre and are open on Sunday afternoons between 12 noon and 4.30pm. Always check the calender and Newsletter to see if we will be at the club as we are quite often out on river trips, surf trips or pool sessions.  The club uses the Welsh Harp reservoir under license from the Welsh Harp Sailing Association. We are located on Woodfield Park playing fields accessed from Cool Oak Lane,West Hendon. Park in the car park by the entrance and walk down the path to the Club House, which is located by the reservoir.

The Club House has changing and toilet facilities,  clubroom with kitchen and externally a slipway, pontoon and storage facilities for the club equipment.  We have a large range of kayaks including whitewater, slalom, freestyle, surf, sit-on-tops, sprint, stand up paddle boards, open canoes, sailing dinghies, windsurfers and a safety power boat.  We can provide buoyancy aids, cagoules, wet suits and helmets for all novice paddlers.

The Club has been granted Planning Permission to re-build the headquarters to provide a purpose-built centre with modern changing and showering facilities, club room, training room, boat storage and administration office and has been carefully designed to respect its surroundings, be sustainable, energy efficient and accessible for all members of the public.  The new building will provide a visible, viable and vibrant centre for the local community and meet the vision, aims and objectives of the Phoenix Canoe Club.  The centre will provide modern and safe facilities to ensure all levels of ability are catered for and provide a hub for other adventurous activities. Thanks to Barratt Metropolitan for their financial assistance in providing a free design team up to Planning Permission stage. We are now at the fundraising stage and are looking for suitable grants, donations and fundraising activities to support our vision.
